Michael’s Story

Michael: From Hopelessness to a Life of Purpose

For more than 20 years, Michael struggled with addiction, moving from place to place, caught in destructive patterns, and searching for something he couldn’t quite find. Life had become a cycle of uncertainty, and hope seemed increasingly out of reach. “Four months ago, I didn’t have any hope. I was running around in the madness. I didn’t feel like I had a purpose on earth.”

Today, Michael’s story looks remarkably different: with support from MCFOAR and the recovery community in Midland, Michael has begun rebuilding his life, discovering not only a renewed sense of hope but also a community where he feels welcomed, supported, and encouraged to succeed.

When he first arrived in the Midland area, he wasn’t sure how he would navigate his new surroundings. Without reliable transportation, even getting into town seemed overwhelming. But rather than allowing those obstacles to discourage him, Michael made a decision to keep moving forward. Now, he wakes up at 5 a.m., takes the bus into Midland, and spends his days attending recovery meetings, walking or biking throughout the community, building relationships, and discovering opportunities to become involved. What initially felt unfamiliar has become a place he proudly plans to call home.

He describes the support he’s encountered in Midland as something he’s never experienced before, particularly the encouragement of people who genuinely want to see individuals in recovery succeed.

“I feel like I have a purpose now. It’s tears of joy today and not tears of pain.”

For Michael, recovery has become about much more than overcoming addiction. It’s about rediscovering himself, reconnecting with his faith, and finding meaningful ways to contribute to the lives of others.

But Sandy believes the way MCFOAR provides that help matters just as much as the resources themselves. People aren’t made to beg for assistance. They’re treated with respect. They’re given space to be honest about where they’ve been and hopeful about where they’re going. And for Sandy, that’s what makes MCFOAR different.

His relationship with God has become central to his transformation. He credits his faith, the recovery tools he’s learned, and the people who have entered his life with helping him find a new direction. Instead of returning to old habits, he’s learning to recognize negative thought patterns and intentionally choose a different path. Additionally, he’s also looking for ways to give back, whether volunteering with the Salvation Army, helping at church, or simply setting up tables and making coffee at recovery meetings. These everyday acts of service represent something much bigger: a commitment to becoming the person he always hoped he could be.

Michael’s journey has also given him a deeper appreciation for family and the people who have believed in him, even when he struggled to believe in himself. He speaks especially fondly of his grandmother, who helped raise him and whose hopes for his future continue to motivate him. Although he knows his recovery journey is far from over, he approaches the future with h excitement rather than fear. After years of uncertainty, he has found something worth working toward.

Michael’s story is a reminder that second chances are about more than leaving the past behind. They’re about discovering new possibilities, finding a community that believes in you, and building a life filled with hope, purpose, and belonging.
